The construction of the Garrison Dam in the 1950s created Lake Sakakawea, flooding more than 152,000 acres of the Fort Berthold Reservation and forcing hundreds of Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara families to leave their homes. The flood submerged the tribal capital of Elbowoods and most of the reservation's best farmland, a tragedy remembered as "The Flood." After decades of seeking justice, the tribes received additional federal compensation in 1992. Today, this history is preserved at the Three Affiliated Tribes Museum in New Town, North Dakota, a community established for families displaced by the dam.
