The Old Indian Meeting House in Mashpee, Massachusetts, built in 1758, is the oldest Native American church in the eastern United States and a symbol of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's enduring history. In 1833, it became the center of the Mashpee Revolt, where tribal members, led by William Apess and local leaders, protested state control over their land and resources. Their efforts led Massachusetts to grant the tribe the right to govern itself in 1834, and the Mashpee Wampanoag later gained federal recognition in 2007.
