In 1887, a gang of white horse thieves ambushed and killed as many as 34 Chinese gold miners at what is now Chinese Massacre Cove in Oregon's Hells Canyon, robbing them and throwing their bodies into the Snake River. Although six men were indicted, no one was ever convicted, and the massacre was largely forgotten until court records resurfaced in 1995. In 2005, the site was officially renamed Chinese Massacre Cove, and in 2012 a trilingual memorial was dedicated to honor the victims and acknowledge that no one was ever held accountable.
