On New Year's Day 1975, the Menominee Warrior Society occupied the former Alexian Brothers' Novitiate near Gresham, Wisconsin, demanding that the property be returned to the Menominee people during the difficult period following federal termination and tribal restoration. The 34-day standoff involved the Wisconsin National Guard, supporters from the American Indian Movement, and actor Marlon Brando before an agreement ended the occupation in February 1975. Today, the original limestone mansion remains on the privately owned Gresham Novitiate property, which is undergoing renovation and is not open to unauthorized visitors.
