The Highlander Folk School, founded in 1932 near Monteagle, Tennessee, became a major training center for the civil rights movement, where leaders like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. learned and organized. The school was targeted by segregationist officials and lost its original campus in 1961, but the organization continued elsewhere. Today, the restored original library building on the former campus is preserved as a historic site and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022.
